Samaritan’s Purse

If you’d asked me several months ago to tell you what came to mind when someone said “Samaritan’s Purse”, my response would have been “Operation Christmas Child”.  Since 1993, 77 million shoeboxes filled with gifts, treats, and basic necessities have been distributed to impoverished children around the world.  Each box, faithfully packed by Christians just like you and me, brings with it both the Gospel message and a genuine hope for the future.

But did you know that Samaritan’s Purse is also actively involved in providing disaster relief around the world?  Join their Volunteer Network and you too, can be involved in rebuilding homes in Japan and Haiti or providing relief to victims right here in the U.S.!

Through World Medical Mission, Samaritan’s Purse is actively placing Christian doctors, nurses, dentists, and other medical personnel in mission clinics worldwide.  These short-term servants are playing an integral role in bringing basic medical care to the underprivileged as well as providing the education necessary to prevent the spread of diseases like HIV/AIDS.  Visit their site to share their mission and Support a Physician!

If you’d like to try something closer to home, check out the newest addition to the Samaritan’s Purse family, “Operation Heal Our Patriots”.  Dedicated to helping U.S. combat veterans and their families recover from the trauma caused by long absence and the horrors of war, “Operation Heal Our Patriots” is providing Christ-centered marriage and financial counseling to our wounded warriors.

There’s plenty more to see, so take a moment to browse the site.  Then, commit to making a difference!

Faith Comes By Hearing

Romans 10:17 tells us, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (NKJV)  But what if you’ve never had the opportunity to hear?  This is a question asked daily by Christians around the world – and one of the many ways that God is answering is through the ministry of Faith Comes By Hearing.

For over forty years, these dedicated missionaries and their partners have been providing audio Scriptures to people around the world – overcoming the barriers of literacy through the spoken word.   Today, thanks to the work of over 60 teams of national workers, the Bible has been dramatized and made available to over 500 different language groups.  This unique way of presenting the Gospel allows those in oral cultures to more fully enter into the story of the Bible, committing its words to memory as the Holy Spirit works within their hearts.  And you can play a part!

Visit their website and view the video outlining their work and download an audio copy of the Bible in the language of your choice or subscribe to a Bible podcast.  Join the “You’ve Got the Time” initiative where you can commit to listen to the Scriptures for 30 minutes a day – the entire New Testament in 40 days – and challenge your friends to share the endeavor with you.

Want to do more?  Why not consider making a financial gift to the ministry and help bring God’s Word to people around the world or even joining Faith Comes By Hearing as a career missionary?

Whatever you do, commit to make a difference today – because “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God!”

The Jesus Film Project

Few experiences have the ability to impact us as deeply as hearing the message that God loves us.  And fewer still than hearing that message in a language we can understand.  That’s why, since 1979, the creators of The Jesus Film Project have made it their priority to relay that message through the visual arts.  To date, over 200 million people have committed their lives to Christ after seeing this gripping account of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection… and you can play a part in bringing the same message to millions more!

Visit the Project website to view The Jesus Film or The Jesus Film for Children, sign up to listen to podcasts of the film, or watch a documentary on the Making of Film Translations.  Then, read the stories of those impacted by the Jesus Film Project and commit to pray for those involved both with the creation and distribution of the film and the hearts of those who will view it.

Want to be more involved?  Why not join The Next Revolution and help fund the smartphone app which will make the Jesus Film available to even more people around the world?  Not your speed?  Consider donating to a special project and provide equipment, support a film team, fund a translation of the Film, or help plant a church!  Check out internships and other job opportunities at the Get Involved link and don’t discount some great opportunities to volunteer, either!

Whatever you do, make a commitment to make a change – and help one more soul understand the message that God loves them!

Presidential Prayer Team

Scripture has a lot to say about the Christian’s response to those in authority.  In Titus 3:1-2, we are advised to, “…be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed, to malign no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing every consideration for all men.”  And in 1 Timothy 2:1-4 we are urged, “…that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.  This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”  It quickly becomes clear that our response to those who rule over us is one of the clearest demonstrations of our faith.  That’s why, this week, we’re featuring the ministry of the Presidential Prayer Team along with some great resources to help you become more involved in making a difference both in our nation and around the world.

A non-partisan organization, PPT is dedicated to providing up to the minute news regarding the issues affecting our nation through their 24-7 Prayer Watch as well as continual coverage of what’s happening Inside Washington.  Through their Viewpoint venue, believers from all perspectives have the opportunity to weigh in on the issues that matter most to them in a fashion that promotes friendly communication between those who don’t always see eye-to-eye.  Record your prayers on the Prayer Wall or take a Prayer University course and learn how to better pray for the leaders who daily influence the direction of our country.  There’s even a Daily Devotion to help you keep your focus as you pray that God’s will be done here… just as it is in heaven!  There’s plenty to see, so take some time to explore the site, then commit to praying regularly for those who govern both our nation and other nations around the world.

Mission Aviation Fellowship

Have you ever wondered what happens when a missionary has a need for food, supplies, or medical aid while serving in a remote, difficult to access area?  For many years the answer was “wait”.  Wait for those who had received the message to load the needed provisions and make the long, hard trek necessary to make the delivery.  It was a wait that could take days, weeks, or even months.  Today, however, such support is often only hours away, thanks to dedicated jungle pilots like those serving with Mission Aviation Fellowship .  Since 1945, MAF has been providing aerial support to mission organizations throughout the world.   Thanks to their skilled pilots, missionaries are able to reach hard to access locations with supplies, medical aid, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  And you can play a part!

Visit their site where you can check out the Video Gallery, sign up to receive their regular publications, or find the resources to host an MAF Sunday at your church.  Make a one year commitment to serve as an Advocate for MAF, sharing the needs and victories of these courageous jungle pilots with your community or become a Volunteer and use the skills you already have to help forward their mission right here in the U.S.!  Want to be more involved?  Check out the MAF Missionary List and select a missionary or missionary family to support through your prayers and finances!  Take some time to explore the site, then commit to making a difference today!

You don’t have to look far to realize that media is influential.  Television, movies, and music present us with unique ways to share our world view.  Through these avenues, men and women of all creeds and perspectives are able to ensure that their views are granted the widest possible audience.  And those views which are shared the most prominently often have the greatest influence on the lives and thinking of those who consume the media through which they’re shared.

That is why Mastermedia has committed to being a positive influence in the lives of those who otherwise might remain unreached by the truth of the Gospel: today’s media influencers.  Through the distribution of literature and one-on-one meetings, they are making a difference in the lives of those who have the some of the most visible effects upon our culture.  From actors and actresses to newscasters and rappers, people are hearing the Gospel and it is changing lives.

Like any ministry, their outreach to those in the entertainment industry would not be possible if not for the involvement of the rest of the body of Christ.  While you may not be able to go to Hollywood and witness on a movie set, you can still make a difference right where you are and that difference begins with a commitment to pray.  Download a copy of the Media Leader Prayer Calendar or check it out online.  Not sure what to pray?  Check out Sixteen Redemptive Prayers for Hollywood for some ideas.  Then, sign up for the Mediator newsletter and get regular updates on the effects that those prayers are having!  Want to be more involved?  Why not start planning an Oscar Prayer Party to help share the need with others?  You can even contact Mastermedia for information and resources that will help you better dialogue with the media influencers in your own “neck of the woods”.  Media makes a difference.  You can too.

One Verse

Over 7,000 languages are spoken in the world today, but of these, fewer than 500 have complete copies of the Bible available to them.  Over 2,000 do not have a single verse.  This leaves nearly 340,000,000 people worldwide who live daily without the knowledge that God loves them and has made a way for them to be reconciled to Him.  Sadly, 7,000 of these people die each day.

One Verse, a project of The Seed Company, is working to change this through Accelerated Bible Translation… but they need your help!  Visit their website to find more about individual Language Projects and to join as a prayer partner or to help in spreading the news about the impact that God’s Word is having upon those who have received the gift of a Bible translation.  Download the Sacrificial Giving App or track your Sacrifice online and join with others in giving up perks and conveniences like coffee, French fries, or movie tickets for the sake of ending Bible Poverty and ensuring that every language receives the Word of God.  Visit the Resources page and view a video, print a poster, or download a widget for your website.  Want to make your support known?  Why not purchase a One Verse T-Shirt or Bandana to help fund Bible translation while at the same time sharing the need with others?  However you choose to get involved, you’ll be making a difference for those who live each day waiting to hear the news that God loves them!

Open Doors

What would life be like without the power of God’s Word?  Ask any of the Christians worldwide who don’t have access to Scripture and they’ll tell you: it’s difficult.  Through the Bible we learn what God wants from us and for us.  We discover how to become more like Christ and find comfort and peace in our trials.  Yet due to persecution, many believers do not have access to the very Word which tells them about the God they serve.

Open Doors was founded in 1955 by a young man from Holland who had joined the army in search of a life of adventure.  After sustaining serious injuries in Indonesia, Brother Andrew, turned his life over to Christ and quickly discovered that God had some special plans for him – plans that would require him to risk his own life to provide relief to his suffering brothers and sisters around the world.  Today, that mission continues, but not without the help of free Christians like us.

Take a moment to visit their website where you can take the Five Minute Challenge, committing to learn about and pray for the 50 countries which are least open to the Gospel.  Follow the blog and discover What You Can Do If You Can’t Financially Support Persecuted Christians or read about What Answered Prayer Looks Like for Persecuted Christians.  Sign up to share the cause by joining the Open Doors Blog Network.

Want something more interactive?  How about spearheading a “Locked-Up” event for your youth group, raising awareness of the issues which face the persecuted church through a simulated prison scenario or volunteering as a Bridgebuilder and working as an advocate within your community?  If you have the inclination, you can even send a Bible to one (or more) of your persecuted brethren.

There are plenty of ways to be involved, so take some time to explore.  Then, commit to making a difference!

Compassion International

How poor is poor?  Well, according to world poverty statistics, if you make an annual income of more than $11,456 a year, you are among the blessed 16% who comprise the world’s richest people.  If you make more than $3,706, you’re in the top 25%.  Over 1.4 billion people around the globe are living on less than $1.25 a day – well below the poverty line.  This lack of income affects everything from educational opportunities  (if you can read this post, be grateful that you aren’t part of the nearly 900 million people worldwide who cannot) to healthcare.

While most of us can’t do anything of substance for most of these people, we can make a real difference in individual lives.  By sponsoring a child through Compassion International, you can provide Biblical training, healthcare, education, and opportunities for advancement to one child living in the clutches of poverty.  For that one child, your involvement makes a lasting imprint, bringing hope to a seemingly hopeless situation.

Don’t have the ability to give?  There are plenty of other opportunities Get Involved.   Join with others around the world as a Prayer Partner (check out the 52 Ways to Pray for Children link), host a Compassion Sunday at your church, or add a Compassion Widget to your Facebook page or website.  However you choose to participate, be assured that your contribution will make a world of difference!
